Cecelia "CC" Robertson and Jean Kirkhart opened Kountry Kubbard Cafe last June (here's Denise's Eagle article about it) and on November 22 there was a fire out back that damaged the cafe and the garage/apartment next door. Luckily, no one was injured, but it's a major setback for a new business on a shoestring. Here's what CC had to say last week:
I and my friend opened up a cafe in the Delano area (2207 W. Douglas). We have worked so hard to make a cafe and boutique. People felt warmth in when they came here, whether to purchase produce, shop in our boutique, or just come and sit. Everyone was made to feel at home - we welcomed you, we listened to you to create meals that you wanted. I was so feeling the love and the warmth myself, and then Tuesday this past week a curve ball was thrown.
Our propane tank out back blew up and caught fire. We are shut down and we need help to reopen. Everything has been put into this place, so I have been overwhelmed in trying to figure out where to start. We had pie orders and tamales that were prepared and awaiting pick up, but unfortunately I lost it all. Now i have my fight on - I'm ready to work hard and get this place opened but in the meantime things take time - inspections and electricians and so on. In the mean time I have a kitchen that I'm going to use - I just need orders. So that I may start getting busy, the things I'm making this week are chili verde tamales. I'm making green chili chicken first then later will be pork. I'm making breads so i need orders.
Tamales are $12 per dozen and breads are $6 per loaf. I know people would like enchiladas but the first few days I am starting with the chicken tamales and breads. Flavors on breads are pumpkin, apple, cinnamon swirl, blueberry, banana, and lemon poppyseed. If I didn't list something put it on here - if you want to order your pies cookies and things you have been getting from me, go ahead and tell me what you need and the date. I will make it.
If you'd like to place an order, or find out when she's back to producing enchiladas, call her at 300-0909.
